Surrounded by the snow-covered Alps and nestling between two beautiful lakes, Interlaken is a township more picturesque than imaginable. It’s wonderful location in the heart of the Bernese Oberland makes it the perfect base location for exploring the surrounding areas including the Jungfrau region.
But once we reached Interlaken and were confronted by its scenic magnificence, we just didn’t feel like leaving. And that’s how charming this quaint little town is! I could spend hours and hours in the town center, just walking by the unique little shops and restaurants. To me, Interlaken is truly the manifestation of Heaven on Earth.
You can travel to Interlaken via train or by car from another Swiss town. We didn’t want to miss out on any experience at all and thus decided to drive down. We planned a romantic day trip from Zurich to Interlaken by car and spent two wonderful hours driving through the gorgeous countryside of Switzerland.
Of course, we could have taken the train but it does not allow the same freedom, flexibility, and excitement as driving across unfamiliar territory does. In the end it also turned out to be less expensive and time consuming than travelling by train. Plus, who doesn’t love a good road trip? We definitely do!
If you’re wondering about which kind of car and where we rented it for this journey, some more details for you: we got a BMW hatchback since we wanted to ride comfortably, without much fatigue. But you can choose from a wide range of vehicles ranging from sedans like Mini Coopers to roomy SUVs as well.
Sixt is a popular and trusted car rental company in Zurich and that’s where we booked our ride. All in all, the experience was great and added to the wealth of memories we’ll take back from our day trip from Zurich to Interlaken. If you’re planning a visit to Switzerland, my suggestion is that you make sure to stop by Interlaken and if possible, drive down to this dreamy township.
Interlaken spells romanticism. And it is small enough that you can explore it all on foot. We spent a considerable amount of time exploring the gorgeous town centre of Interlaken. Long, balmy evening with cutesy souvenir shops around! Yes, some days we like to keep our itinerary light and simply absorb the beauty around.
The town forms as the perfect base for taking day trips to nearby mountain ranges – Jungfrau and Eiger. When in Interlaken, simply walk past the traditional chalet-style houses or alternatively you could rent a cycle and explore. Let’s show you the town in our pictures:
Hope you enjoyed looking at our pictures of Interlaken. Meanwhile, we are planning a return trip to Switzerland this year! Drop in suggestions of some offbeat, romantic places to explore in Switzerland.

Hey Kathy! Yes, we did a one-day trip to Interlaken from Zurich and returned our car the very same day. I’d suggest you to book your car well in advance as the last minute rental rates are really high. Hey,
It looks awesome and Beautiful..We are Travelling to Swiss in the end of April and we are having base in Interlaken for 5 nights to explore all nearby Mountains and Cities…Now My main question is like I have never driven in any foreign Countries and would like to start now in Swiss..I wanted to know how difficult it is or easy? Like driving left hand drive following Road signs, signals ,Parking etc etc…Kindly do let me know…
Hey Vish,
Glad you enjoyed our blog and Switzerland indeed is one beautiful country. Honestly, it could be a little intimidating driving in Interlaken if you wish to explore all the nearby mountains and cities as the roads are narrow in a lot of parts. Parking is expensive. I would not like to discourage you anyhow but having traveled this country on car and rail both, I’d always recommend everyone to invest in a Swiss Pass with eyes closed. Not only Swiss is well-connected by rail, this mode is comfortable and offers great discounts on many mountain peaks including Titlis and Mt. Rigi. You won’t be worried all the time about the signals, parking, driving rules, etc. In fact you can sit, relax, and enjoy the striking scenery even better. But then again, it’s your personal choice and I’d say, go for it if you want to. Have fun! 🙂
